With three wins West Coast had its best season since 1986. The only heavy defeat was inflicted by Thames Valley in the last game and the Coasters made a reasonable showing in most of their other matches. The highlight of the season was the upset win over semi-finalist Wanganui in an away game. West Coast kept up a constant attack in this match and never looked like losing. A number of “imports” from other unions strengthened West Coast considerably. One of these, Shaun Fahey, who last represented the Coast in 1993 from the Marist club, was in good form throughout the season. His counter-attacks were a feature of the team`s back play.

Michael Foster set a union record for most points in a season, while his all-round play was of a high standard. Daniel O`Donovan also performed well, especially in the Wanganui match, while Aaron Honey, in his first season for West Coast, showed considerable promise. Captain Shane Fletcher, Dion Kitchin and Steve Montgomery were a formidable loose forward combination who produced high work rates. Locks Colin Van der Geest, Karl Perkins and Arthur Gillman worked well in the tight and Gillman was especially prominent in the lineout with his clean, two-handed takes. Another newcomer, Mark Dineen, was a promising prop whose strength was an asset in the scrums.
